Leicester Underwater Exploration Club

About the club

Leicester Underwater Exploration Club was formed in 1958 by a small group of enthusiastic people who had discovered the new sport of Scuba diving.

Over the years the original members drifted away from the club, mostly moving away from Leicester but we still have one of the early club members, Roger Poll, who is director of Midland Diving Co. Ltd.

The club was independent, in the early days, until in 1967 when it joined the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) and became Branch No. 0321.

During the early years membership was around the 40 mark but around the time the club joined the BSAC underwater films were beginning to be shown on the TV and this boosted membership up to the 120 mark. Membership stayed around this mark, rising to around 150 in 1976 where it stayed until the mid 90 s. Current membership is around the 70 mark.

The club meets between 8.00pm and 10.30pm on a Thursday night at Aylestone Leisure Centre (map) in Leicester for theory and practical training.

Open water dives are done at the local dive sites, Stoney Cove and Swithland Wood a Sunday morning with mid week dives being done at Stoney Cove on the first and third Wednesday in the month.

The club runs both the BSAC Diving and Snorkelling courses. It is also possible to have a go with our Try-Dive's.

The club welcomes any qualified divers who are looking for a club with an active dive programme to continue their diving.
